Beyond Us

It’s so much bigger than us.

As humans it’s difficult for us to see beyond what we believe is humanly possible. When God reveals something to us, we are only able to receive what we’re able to understand, or what makes the most sense to us at that time; missing the true magnitude of the revelation. This is why the word of God tells us not to lean on our own understanding (see Proverbs 3:5-6), because our understanding is limited in the face of revelation given by a limitless God.

God woke me up early this morning to pray. I began praying about what weighed heavy on my heart the night before. I’m going to try to explain this as best as I can, so that you all are able to understand how I felt as I prayed…

I closed my eyes and focused on God, and what He had spoken to me over the past few years regarding the subject of my prayer. I prayed in agreement with what had been revealed to me regarding what the future holds; a promise from God. The more I prayed the smaller I began to feel in comparison to the purpose of the manifestation of the promise. It was as if, unbeknownst to me, in praying, I had decreased, making room for God to increase in the midst of my circumstance. The more I prayed, the less “in control” I felt; it all felt too heavy, like it was impossible for me or anyone to carry the weight of such a purpose without supernatural help; without the help of God Himself.

To give you a mental picture: I felt like an ant carrying a bread crumb. If you’ve ever seen this in person, the bread crumb is usually significantly larger than the ant. A promise with a purpose so large in comparison to me, that it quite literally overshadowed me.

As we receive on a human level, oftentimes we miss the bigger picture. I prayed in agreement with the more superficial side of this promise from God, but by allowing me to feel insignificant in comparison to my petition, God was trying to show me that the manifestation of this promise in its entirety, is larger than what my human mind could even imagine; its purpose is beyond me.

Even with the help of the Holy Spirit there’s much we will never fully understand, nevertheless, we accept what the Lord allows us to understand, and leave what we do not understand, in His hands.

The mission is larger than us, and though we may at times be able to perceive parts of God’s plan, we will never be able to grasp the fullness of all that He is doing, and has done, we simply could not handle the knowledge of God.

I struggle with God’s timing at times. Sometimes I feel like He is slow to keep His promises, then months go by, and in realizing the reason behind the delay, I find myself thankful for the time He kept me waiting (God is ALWAYS on time). Even in understanding there’s a reason behind His actions, still it is sometimes difficult to cope with the moments in between; when you haven’t quite arrived, but you know you’ve come a long way.

I say all this to say, even when you lack understanding, which may feel like the majority of the time, remember that it’s beyond us; all that God has for you, is not just for you. We are blessed to be a blessing, and it takes time for us to mature, and become ready in the eyes of the Lord to steward well over our blessings, and actually be able to serve others from what’s been given to us.

Trust God. I know waiting is hard, but know that God has not forgotten about you. It’s all for a very special reason, even if you never quite understand the fullness of that reason.

I’m learning that it’s okay not to have all the details, it’s okay not always knowing who, what, when, where, how, or why. As long as you are submitted to the omnipresent, omniscient, and omnipotent God Almighty Who loves you beyond your understanding, and has your best interests at heart, you’ll be just fine.

Scripture to reflect on:

2 Peter 3:9

9) The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5) Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6) in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.
