I Just Live Here—Pt. 1
Written 01/31/2022
Ever heard the phrase, “It’s their world, I just live in it”?
When I think of that phrase, my mind immediately goes to the Lord. We often use it jokingly when referring to someone we love—parents say it all the time about their kids. Children can be both helpless and demanding, so parents often find themselves decreasing so that their children can increase.
Sound familiar?
You see where I’m going with this, right? Who you allow to govern your life determines how you treat that life.
Think about it like this: if you borrow a friend’s phone, you’re likely to be extra careful with it—not just because it’s valuable, but because it doesn’t belong to you. Out of respect for your friend, you handle it with more care than you might even handle your own. That’s the mindset we should carry when it comes to our lives.
We love to say, “It’s my life!” But the truth is—it’s not. Our lives are not our own. Everything we are and everything we have belongs to God. We are simply stewards of the time, the breath, and the experiences He allows us to have. And if we really grasp that truth, we’ll begin to treat our lives with greater reverence and responsibility.
So let me ask you:
Who—or what—are you allowing to govern your life?
Because that answer shapes every decision you make.
If it’s social media, you may find yourself striving to meet the expectations of the world. If it’s your career, maybe your identity becomes tied to your productivity. And if God is not the ultimate governing force in your life, then you’re likely walking in conflict with His Word—whether you realize it or not.
Of course, as always, this is easier said than done. But awareness is the beginning of transformation. The moment I came to this realization, I felt an immediate conviction—not just for past decisions, but for how I was currently living.
So I challenge you today:
Look in the mirror and ask yourself—how have I been treating the life God has allowed me to borrow?
Though we all desire for God to be the only one in the driver’s seat, the reality is that we often let other things climb in and take control. Our job, as followers of Christ, is to recognize when we’ve pushed Him out of that seat—and restore Him to His rightful place.
Scriptures to reflect on:
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NLT)
(19) Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, (20) for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.
Matthew 6:24 (NLT)
(24) “No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.
